Killer in the Backseat - Urban Legend
The "Killer in the Backseat" story plays on our fears that danger is right under our noses and we are not aware of it. This story was conceived in the late 1960s and has been circulated ever since. Some more recent versions of this story involved gang members out on initiation night, others involve modern gas stations. The story here is in a more traditional form and goes something like this...

On a moonless, foggy night, my friend was sleepy and having trouble driving on the road due to a recent rain. She was getting frustrated because she was running low on gas and there was no sign of civilization anywhere. Not knowing where the next town was, she was ready to pull over and get some sleep when she noticed a tiny, rundown gas station.

She pulled in and asked for the attendant to fill up her tank. She noticed he was acting very odd -- and somewhat irritated. He finally proceeded to fuel her car and then told her to open up the hood because "something didn't sound right."

Reluctant and afraid of the odd-acting attendant, she didn't want to be stranded later on down the road, so she got out. When she neared the front of the car, the attendant grabbed her and said she would have to step inside. With his hand over her mouth silencing her, he dragged her into the station.

Very afraid, she struggled, and the attendant let her go and blocked the door. He then said "There is a man crouched down in the backseat of your car and I didn't want him to know that I'd seen him."

After calling the police, my friend then learned that the stranger in her backseat was a serial killer who stowed away in her back seat, planning to make her his next victim.

This version sometimes has the woman and the gas station attendant getting married and having children. Other versions have the attendant telling her there was a problem with her credit card and that she'd have to come inside.

Yet another variation has a man getting into her backseat AT the gas station while the woman is inside the store. The attendant notices and tells the woman to stay inside and proceeds to call the police.

This is only an Urban Legend but there's a lesson here - While it's unlikely you'll have any serial killers lurking in your backseat, always keep your door locked and check the backseat before you get in.

I think that this is one that will run and run, there's been killer in the back seat legends since the beginning of cars and propably before with horse drawn carriages and i love them!

there's another variation on this we used to tell at school, only one of my friends believed it until we were well into our 30s!

a young couple go for a drive on a moonlit night when they run out of petrol on a forest road. The girl obviously thinks that the young man has planned this but when she sees he is genuinely angry about it calms down and believes him. The couple decide as its starting to rain that the girl will wait in the car to save getting wet. He says that he will find the nearest petrol station and sets out with his petrol can in hand.

A while later the girl is listening to the radio in the car when an announcement comes on about an escaped inmate from a local mental asylum. it warns people to stay indoors and not go out alone as the person is very dangerous. the girl is justifiably terrified and waits for her boyfriend to return.

a long while passes when she sees a shadow through the trees moving towards the car, the shadow has something in their hand so she is relieved into thinking it is her boyfriend, but he doesn't open the car door...

the girl loses sight of the figure in the dark but then there begins a rhythmic thud thud thud on the roof of the car! the girl shouts to her boyfriend to stop being stupid as he's scaring her but the thud thud thud continues. the girl is petrified and doesn't know what to do. she sees lights in the distance and hopes it is someone who can help her. all the while she can hear thud thud thud...

luckily for her the lights belong to a police car, it stops and one of the officers asks her to move from the car but not look back, the other moves to the back of the car. the girl shakily moves out of the car and starts to walk towards the officer but she can't resist an urge, she turns her head and sees...

the escaped lunatic holding the bloody severed head of her boyfriend as he is banging it rhythmically on the roof of the car, THUD, THUD, THUD

You have to wonder about how these urban legends get started.
