Save Little Green St

Post  Guest on Wed Sep 12, 2007 9:30 am

http://www.LittleGreenStreet.com

Being a fan of the rock group The Kinks, this little street is close to my heart. In 1966 The Kinks filmed a video on this street for their chart topping hit Dead End Street, the video was banned because the band dressed as undertakers and carried a coffin. The Kinks founder and lead guitarist Dave Davies also dressed in drag for the video. Now the street is under threat from developers who want to turn it into a access road for the building site at the back. The street only has 10 houses and is one of a handful of Georgian Streets that remain intact in London, the houses were built in the 1870's and are grade 2 listed.

Dave Davies has signed a petition to try and stop this little street from being destroyed. Read his comments here: http://www.thecnj.co.uk/camden/083007/news083007_03.html

We need to save Little Green Street and soon because if these developers have their way we will have no heritage left. Please click the following link and put your name to the petition.

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/littlegreenstreet/?e,

Thank you.

I've signed Sarah, this sort of thing really makes my blood boil. That developer will make a packet selling those dwellings. They should get in touch with British Heritage, after all family homes are just as much part of our heritage as large country estates.

You've got no chance Mikey bigredgrin but you could always ask Geoff if he would do a voice clip, as you can understand him, I don't think you'd understand me though bigredgrin

Sarah this has been all over our news today, thought you would like to know. One of my favourite actors Tom Conti, (whom I have had the pleasure of chatting too when I should have been working) is involved.

Really? I've not seen the news but I doubt we would get anything about it in Manchester, it's funny that I haven't had a update from the campaigners. Thanks for letting me know Mags, was there anything else about it?

I meant to post this the other day, Tony Conti (sigh) was on This Morning, talking about a new film he was in and various other things.
Towards the end of the interview he mentioned Little Green Street and the ongoing dispute. They showed footage of them lying down in the street, and there was hardly any room between their heads and the pavements.

I know it's only a little street, I can't believe this is still going on, I thought it had been resolved as I haven't heard anything about it in ages. Sad

They (the developers) were given the go ahead, and Camden Council appealed and won. Now the Developers are appealing against the decision. Of course if the developers have lots of money they can tie up the campaign in years.

I know and it's so sad that they are so determined to destroy this little street, I feel so sorry for the people that live there not to mention all the people that use the street daily as a short cut to work and school. I can imagine that they were elated when they thought they'd won only to have that elation cut short. I hope the developers lose their appeal.

Little Green Street made our news again yesterday.
It has been put on a list, of places to see before they disappear, like the Amazonian Rain Forest.
It says that the cobbles and bollards down the street are in danger of being ripped up by the developers to allow their heavy goods vehicles access to their site.

Mad I'm angry Mad it's clear that all these developers want is money and quickly, they don't care about the history of the place nor the residents of those 8 houses, there is another way to get to the building site but that means building a road around the back of the street but they don't want to do that as this would mean going miles out of the way. This street is part of history and I for one tip my hat to all those people that are campaigning to keep it.

Mad Mad Mad I cant even think straight I am so mad when will people see sense once this lovely street is gone its gone for good and you can build any office, shop, house anywhere it just makes me want to weep it really does I just cant bear stuff like this it really upsets me as I am so passionate about our history and buildings etc. You would think we would have learnt by now take after the war with the slum clearances ok I really do get that most of these houses were appaling and the new high rise flats with there lovely bathrooms etc must have been like a dream come true but what the planners did not take into consideration was community life what they should have done is where possible restored the houses and put in bathrooms etc they did this in Bristol with great success or rebuilt the houses in the same streets etc therefore keeping communities together. Planners they never learn I know with Bristol how much damage they have done and imo they done more damage than the blitz Mad
