Thanks Dan, thanks for mentioning we didn't have a sceptic's corner. A dreadful oversight on our behalf. Although we tend to be believers, a healthy dose of sceptism is good for everyone.

Now he will have to fill the section won't he? hysterical We will have to give him his own tech site to give us hints on all the latest technical equipment.

I think Dan and Tori will be turning us all into sceptics as Dan has already made me look at Orbs in a completely different way bigredgrin

It's good to be sceptical. I'm the believer but I am always saying to Norm that he hasn't got an orb in a picture, although the one of blue orbs in that Cemetary are rather good.

I think the trick to investigating the Paranormal is as you say mel, to look at things in a different way. This is the advantage to internet forums and websites, it allows us to access info from different people and take on new ideas that can change the way we go about our own investigations. From a personal point of view i am willing to believe in ghosts and other stuff, but i need to sort the wheat from the chaff. I also think that any evidence that you capture will only be taken seriously by yourself, there is a good chance that no one will believe you anyway and an even more sceptical person will always appear to debunk whatever you say you have seen or experienced.
I like being sceptical and i enjoy investigations just as much by eliminating the normal and then trying hard to explain what is left. This doesnt always make me Mr Popular on certain invos, due to some people being far to willing to believe in everything that they see and hear. I also think that if you lean towards being sceptical, its important to know when to stop what you are saying before you shatter peoples beliefs and hurt their feelings. Ive nearly done this in the past and its like knocking someone elses religion.
Technology can be a great weapon in the believers armoury, although it is important to fully understand the equipment that you are using. EVP is a good example, voices captured on tape, are they paranormal or are they radio signals picked up from radio stations because your microphone lead is acting like an aerial. Unless you fully understand all the problems associated with this phenomenon and many others ( and very few do) we need to be careful. The EMF meter is another often misunderstood piece of kit, that is more often than not detecting electricity cables and pipes in the walls rather than ghosts passing by.
OOOps just realised im going off on one scarper

You are not going off on one Dan, that was interesting Smile I tend to look for explanations when something strange happens. One of my hates are the fake mediums around Mad I think they are disgraceful taking advantage of vunerable people. I think that some mediums are just actors- and not all that good into the bargain!! I will always remember one quite well known woman who asked one person in the audience if they had someone in spirit!!! Well who hasn't? So pleased It was a local show that I didn't pay much to see Rolling Eyes

I agree with you there about technology Dan, Sarah and I experienced this when at Hyde we noticed that the KII EMF Meter I had on the table in front of me was going mad, until we realised everyone was turning on their phones during their break to say goodnight to their children. hysterical
I experienced something at a location, I had been filming and just touched the stop button on my recorder, now I have a delay on my recorder, and I waited to see if it had recorded what I experienced. Unfortunately I hadn't, so no proof, althought I did tell one of the team who ran the investigation and I have told someone here just in case someone experiences the same thing.

At the Phantomfest events, if you have been previously you are asked not to tell anyone of your experiences and if you experience anything during the night, not to tell any of the other groups. If you are staying the weekend they ask you not to go to the first night round up.
They keep two sets of records of each event. One with experiences of the night, but if it has already been experienced on a previous event, they consider that coroboration and it goes into a different set of records as experiences that have already been verified. They are building up a set of events more and more.
Myself, and others who are on this forum were in a room at Phantomfest and although the atmosphere had been light and happy before we stood in a circle, we noticed it changed, the room became more unwelcoming and to me darker, I commented on this and others mentioned they had thought so too! At another event, in the same room, they managed to catch the decending darkness on camera, the same person sitting in a chair had the sense to take two or more pictures in quick succession.
This is an event lead by a group who are more scientific based and they show you how you can be lulled into a sense of believing everything. They hold experiments to show you how easily the mind can be fooled into thinking a certain way.

Dan your not going off on one that was a very interesting post of yours and I agree that you got to look at things from a sceptic point of view on invo's to rule everything out then you can be more sure that something is paranormal. I find that although I belive I am becoming more sceptic and questioning far more than ever before. bigredgrin

It's the better way to be Mel, hopefully more and more investigating believers will become more sceptical and not put every noise or experience down to being paranormal.

Hollyrose, i agree entirely, i am very very cautious of mediums. I know someone who doesnt have a psychic bone in his body, but his party piece is to pretend that he has mediumistic powers and give a convincing reading. His "victims" are usually people who are believers in mediums, but unaware of their tricks, and so are easy prey as they unknowingly giving away useful info. they are pretty shocked when they are told the truth but hopefully they will go to their next reading with both eyes open.

Mel, it is good to hear that you are becoming more sceptical. I dont think that scepticism will change your beliefs even in the long term, and it hasnt changed mine, its just good to see things from a few different angles. It may even strengthen your views as you are able to gradually remove doubt about certain parts of them.

Dan I loved the story of your friends party trick Smile As you say it will make people aware of the clever tricks that fakes can use. Some people are oblivious to how much they are giving away to these "mediums" Rolling Eyes

hollyrose, its also a favourite trick of the circuit mediums to have fake members of the public in the queue to get into the show, just chatting to other innocent people about why they are here. They easily find out where these people are from, who in their family has died recently and other personal stuff that is gained by just being friendly and chatty to unsuspecting people. This info is passed to the medium to be used in the show. If you think this is happening to you then just give out false info and then see if it gets used by the fraudster on the stage.

I think I've mentioned this before, DA was said to have been guilty of that. Someone I used to speak to on the now defunct YFF (Yvette Fielding Forum) said that one of his friends mothers went to see DA a number of years ago when he was at his height and still in favour with Yvette and co. She was a firm believer in Derek and wouldn't hear a word said against him. She went to see him live and came home telling her family how exciting it had been and how accurate "the wonder scouse" was and that she couldn't wait to go again. She got that opportunity the following night when she was given another ticket. She got exactly the same seats as the previous night. She was still excited until she over heard two women, who were sat in front of her, say that they hoped they got a message tonight as they didn't last night when they were promised that they would. After the show she found out that the two women who were sat in front of her were allegedly approached by a member of DA's staff and asked a number of questions, the answers were allegedly reported back to DA but he didn't have time to get round to them so they were given free tickets to go back the following night and promised that they be first. Needless to say the woman was upset that she'd been duped and as far as I know has never seen DA live again.
