Alistair Crowley

Post  Mel_Kim on Tue Sep 25, 2007 2:33 am

Whilst in London this weekend I went to the National Portrait Gallery and whilst walking around saw a portrait of Alistair Crowley I have tried to get the picture on here for you to see but its not on photobucket and found it on the National Portrait Site but you have to apply for permission to put it up on a web site. The information at the gallery said that he came from a family of Plymouth Breveren now they are really really god fearing so I was quite shocked because Crowley (I dont know much about him etc) but he was very into the Dark Arts? anyway strange portrait.

That is really strange that he should have that kind of upbringing and end as he was. You should really join CJ.23's site and have a chat about with him about ALister Crowley, I have read several bits that he has posted over the years and they make interesting reading.

Alistair Crowley was a strange person, he founded a religious cult if I remember rightly. I'll attack google and see what I can find on him.

I will have to read up on him etc it was just such a strange painting and for its time as well that I read who it was and recognised the name but was shocked to hear about his upbrining etc because they are very god fearing and strict etc. I also saw the picture of Adelena Patty who is a ghost at one of the places MH went to she was very pretty.

I've googled his name Mel and got Wikipedia up. I was sort of right, he was a member of several cults but I don't think he founded one. Anyway here's the link for wikipedia.

crowley started off ok, alot of his work with the occult was for good use, but in his later years he got a little sordid and his addiction to opium didnt help, however his kabbalistic tarot, the thoth deck is still in use today.

Adeline Patty was an opera singer and mh went to her home at Craig-y-Nos, which is quite near Swansea, on the road to Mumbles there is a pavillion theatre called the Adelaine Patty Pavillion, where Catherine Zeta Jones made her theatrical debut. bigredgrin
