Interesting story and also seems to hold out my theory that a lot of the time women accused of being witches were probably victims of someone in position of authority or some one simply out to grab land.
A woman who owned land would be considered a threat as would a woman who was independant. It could be that the woman was simply fond of someone on the other side of war and so an easy way to get her comdemned to death would have been an accusation of witchcraft.

Yes like you say Mags its so very sad and so unfair if you were a woman you had no rights even Lady Glamis (probably spelt that wrong) was accused of witchcraft and burnt at the stake all because the king hated her family terrible.

If you are talking about James VI (or James I) as the English call him, he was obsessed with hunting witches and wrote a pamphlet against them.
You have to wonder where his terror of witches and warlocks came from but when you think that his mother's husband the Earl of Bothwell, who's sister married his uncle (Mary's illegitimate brother) was said to be a warlock by some.
There is no doubt as a parentless child, someone prayed on his terror of these things and made him worse.
I also think the Puritans used the Witch Hunts to rule out anyone who could be of opposition to them.

Mel, when he was young he was told that Bothwell had bewitched his mother, in fact this is supposedly what Bothwell was held for in Denmark.
Then when he was bringing Anne of Denmark to Scotland they nearly drowned in a storm off Edinburgh so he believed that witches had stirred it up.
I always believed that his father Darnley was mental imbalanced and think to a certain extent the way he was brought up never trusting anyone led to all sorts of strange beliefs.

Yes Darnley was a strange man and maybe James inherited this strangeness if that makes sense.
