Stroll into oblivion David Lang vanishes
On September 23 1880, whilst taking a stroll on his land, David Lang vanished from sight, whilst in view of five other people in Gallantin Tennessee.
Mr Lang, was strolling towards his children, Sarah 11 and George 8, across a field in the direction of his home.
It was bright sunny day, Mrs Lang had just come out of the house to greet a couple of visitors who had been approaching in the buggy.
The visitors were said to be Judge August Peck and his brother in law (whether this is Mr Lang's b-i-l or the Judge's is not clear).
David Lang was seen to acknowledge the visitors by a wave of his hand.
He took several steps forward, then disappeared from view. This was accompanied by the anguish screams of his wife who watched her husband simply vanish in front of her eyes.
Dispite searches then and into the night by others who came to help and a survey of the land the next day, David Lang was never found.
His wife refused to hold either a memorial service or a funeral for her husband.
She left the property after her children claimed they heard their father calling to them from the area where he disappeared.
This story appears in full in the book, The Worlds Greatest Ghosts by Roger Boar and Nigel Blundell.
