If you have watched Gone with the Wind, then you will have idea of how Charleston used to be. The famous scene with Rhett Butler whipping a blindfolded horse dragging a wagon, being led by Scarlett O'Hare through the burning street of Charleston, an almost dead Miss Melly holding her newborn child in her arms is very evocative.
Although almost raised to the ground during the civil war, this city, has seen history on it's doorstep.
With such a turbulent past, it is no wonder, there are ghost walks and hauntings in this city.

I was named for the Miss Melly character (Melanie) in the film Gone with the Wind my sister is the only one on Gods Green Earth who is allowed to and gets away with calling me Melly yuk

When Tom and my s-i-l told me they were going to call their son Ashley, I would say 'oh Ashley, Ashley, Ashley' in my best southern accent. It used to drive them crazy.

My sister named me as she loved the film and the name Melly thank goodness its Melanie on my birth certificate but why oh why could they not have called me Scarlett My sister always calls me Melly and even writes that in cards to me etc my brothers call me it and I just about let them get away with it I tell you when your a kid being called smelly Melly just because it rymes is so not on (by the way I did not smell)

My neice had a dolly we called Smelly Elly, I had to be very careful when Norm's neice called her daughter Ellie.

No I made the mistake once, but seeing as that side of the family ostracized us, it is not a probelm.
