In 1770 an act of parliament said that all women be they maid or widow or virgin that shall betray into marriage by the use of paints, scents, false teeth or hair, cosmetics or even high heeled shoes shall incur the penalty of the law, now enforced against witchcraft and the marriage shall be null and void!

Talk about double standards! I suppose those dandies who used to float around with their perfumed hankies thought it was 'one rule for us and another for the women'

Thats a good point you make there hun did not think of that. Also I bet this rule did not apply to the rich as ladies of that time always painted. Even Elizabeth I used to use a compact make from lead I think.
