National Hotel Jackson California
Originally built as a traveller's stop, The National Hotel was original a wooden structure.
The hotel opened in 1842 and was home to miners as well as dignitaries of the day as they travelled.
Unfortunately the original building was destroyed by a fire that wrecked havoc on Main Street, destroying the town's buildings which had mainly been built of wood during the Gold rush of California which brought prosperity to the area.
Rebuilt in 1862, the present hotel has a wood structure built on a brick foundation.
Among those who still linger in the hotel is two eleganly and beautiful woman, a boy and a girl and a dog.
During a renovation, a worker decided to spend the night rather than drive home and return in the morning.
You can read his experience on the following link as well as an investigation report.
Still operating as a hotel, it is worth a visit if you find yourself in Northern California

Re: National Hotel Jackson California
I have always wanted to go to a real wild west town like you see on the old films etc. Shame it burnt down but I guess because most of these towns were made from mostly wood it was quite common. I have always thought these places to be haunted when you think of the life expectancy etc

Mel, when you get a moment take a look at that site, it has some pictures and it sounds as if some of the building was rebuilt in wood but not all of it.
Should you ever get to California and decide to take a side trip to Las Vegas, on the main road from L.A. you pass a ghost town called Calico, you can visit it. My sister did with her kids and they loved it, the only reason we didn't was because Kirsten was only 5 months old and the heat was getting too much in the car even with the air conditioning on, so we drove on to Las Vegas so I could get her into the hotel.
Some of the buildings from Calico were moved to Knottsberry Farm which is a theme park (it was there before Disneyland) which a family built on their farm and the wife used to sell Chicken dinners with pie to follow.
